ATTENDANCE
Prompt and regular class attendance, with preparation adequate for full class participation, is expected of all students. Students are prohibited from sitting for the final exam or otherwise receiving a passing grade in any course for which that student has attended fewer than 80 percent of the scheduled class sessions. Specifically, a student missing 20 percent or more of the total scheduled class hours in a course, whether due to excused or unexcused absences, is presumed to not be attending regularly, subject to the discretion of the dean. In the event that a student is deemed to not be attending regularly, the dean shall determine whether the student receives a W or an F in the course. For further attendance information, please see Law School Rules, Regulations, and Policies.
Absence Due to Religious Observance
It is the policy of the university to excuse without penalty students who are absent because of religious observances and to allow the makeup of work missed because of such absence. Examinations and special required out-of-class activities ordinarily are not scheduled on those days when such students refrain from participating in secular activities. Absences for reasons of religious obligation will not be counted for purposes of reporting. A student absent from an examination because of required religious observance will be given an opportunity to make up the examination without penalty.
Cancellation of Classes
It is the general policy of the university not to cancel classes or examinations because of inclement weather. However, because of the occasional hazards of night driving in winter, exceptions may be made for evening classes and, under exceptionally hazardous conditions, exceptions may be made for daytime classes. During severe weather conditions, announcements concerning the cancellation of classes are posted on the law school website, the campus website, and broadcast via text messaging. Arrangements for makeup work are announced by individual instructors.
